Hi, I understand it is a time of many unknowns. My Sheltie, Sadie was diagnosed with early kidney disease in Sept 2015. She has managed very well with with diet and meds for 1.5 years. We have had a few bumps in the road, but overall things have gone fairly smoothly. I did a lot of research and reading. Diet is very important. But depending on your dogs numbers, she may not even need restrictions if it is very early. I am feeding Royal Canin Renal wet food (NOT dry) and I also supplement with a little protein (since the renal food is low protein and protein restriction is controversial in early to moderate kidney disease) and other low phosphorus foods since my dog is picky and won't eat the canned food alone. Low phosphorus is important in kidney disease. There are lots of good choices you can offer like egg whites (not the yolk very often since its high in phosphorus), sweet potato, pumpkin, green beans, white rice (not brown), white pasta if you need to supplement. I give her pills in cream cheese, since it's the lowest phosphorus cheese. In addition, I am giving my dog the supplement Azodyl, a 1/2 of a pepcid twice a day and she is on a phosphate binder, which was added about 8 months ago. Of course, your Vet should decide on what is appropriate based on the kidney and other values of your dog. Wishing Poppies well!
Ok. Hi and welcome. First things first ... please get all copies of blood test reports and urinalysis reports and post the results here. Armed with that info we can offer far more accurate suggestions.
In the meantime, have a read of my article (link below), which will offer some more immediate info following diagnosis.
Can you also let us know what the vet has offered by way of treatment and/or management and whether your dog has any other health conditions/medicines we need to be aware of.
Don't worry. We will be able to offer both help and support. This is not an easy or straightforward journey, but with pro-active management, many dogs live for many more months and even years in some cases and when the disease is caught early.
