Can mycobacterium avium complex cause asthma?

Hi, I was diagnosed with having MAC back in July of 2005.  I got MAC from my hot tub water.  Sputum samples matched MAC bacteria found in hot tub water.  It took several months to get my full lung capacity back then x-rays were done to make sure all the nodules were gone from my lungs (x-rays were clear).  Just recently I have had 2 wheezing/coughing episodes (maybe asthma setting in?).  I am a 34 yr. old female who grew up on a farm, played sports in high school and have never had any symptoms of asthma.  Could there be a link to the MAC that I had 3 years ago?  Can MAC come back?  Can MAC make someone more susceptible to getting asthma later on?  I would appreciate your input, not alot of doctors are familiar with mycobacterium avium complex!!  Thank you.

A person with mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) can develop asthma and vice versa, but there is no proven cause and effect relationship.  MAC can re-appear, even with an apparently good response to therapy, 3 years ago.  You were fortunate to have that good response to therapy, initially.

While unusual in one who grew up on a farm, asthma symptoms can occur in the 3rd or 4th decade of life, seemingly for the first time.  Even if you prove to have asthma, your phlegm should be cultured for MAC.
