The most common cause of what you describe is postnasal drip, due to chronic inflammation of the nose and/or sinuses.  Alternatively, the source of the phlegm could be the lungs.  There are a number of chronic lung diseases that can cause chronic productive cough including, asthma, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis to name a few.

The best advice I can give is that you consult with a lung specialist who should be able to discover the source of both cough and phlegm and prescribe appropriate treatment.

As for the feeling of "someone sitting on your chest" that may or may not be related to the productive cough and should be prepared to stress the importance of it to you and your well being and must be explored as well.

Good luck.

I cough constantly with the symptoms becomming more violent and severe at night... I have that feeling of some one on my chest... (shortness of breath and pressure)  I dont know what it is but if you or any one has any comments I am listening! I have an appointment with mydr tomarrow but you know, it is hard to get any dr to listen and take you seriously!  Hope you find out the cause of your condition, Ill be praying for you!
