chronic chest pain

5 months ago I had walking pneumonia.  I also had mild asthma which use to only be triggered by my allergies but seems to have worsened and is triggered by other things? although right now I'm not on meds.  I've had this chest pain, which is pretty mild, but has bee consistent, comes and goes everyday since the pneumonia. But occasionally get some sharp stabbing pains, on either side, and that I've had for as long as i can remember.  I am 34 and pretty healthy, don't smoke, exercise regularly, good diet, no family history.  I've had blood work, and Echocardiogram, a chest x-ray, and all were clean/fine.  Sometimes the pain is on the left side.  I'm convinced that I have some digestive issues, always lots of gas, whether or not i've eaten.  I seem to wake up with gas.  Saw a pulmonoligist and i'm trying some ibuprofin, before i get a scan.  I dont think its muscular.  It also seems to be relieved when I take a breath/inhale?

Pre-existent asthma frequently worsens after a serious respiratory infection, such as pneumonia and the worsening may persist for months or longer.  Asthma is not a cause of chest pain.  You have had appropriate testing for heart and lung disease.  Your suspicion of digestive problem(s) is reasonable, specifically upper GI disease, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).  That should be evaluated by a 24 hour pH probe or by esophagoscopy.

That the pulmonologist placed you on ibuprofen suggests that he/she suspects musculoskeletal pain and that, too, is understandable, even though you don't believe that "it's muscular".  That and intercostal (between ribs) neuritis can also cause such pains.  While the pain is not typical of that seen with pulmonary emboli, commonly called clots to the lungs, it might be reasonable to consider that diagnosis as well.

Good luck.
