Mucolytic medication that thin mucus, such as guaifenesin and potassium iodide are probably not harmful, but studies have not confirmed the effectiveness or value.  Guaifenesin may also have some cough suppressant activity, but not to the extent that it might compromise a useful, productive cough.  Those medications that induce sleep or contain cough suppressants, such as antitussives, narcotics including codeine, and antihistamines should be avoided.
