questionable nuclear scan

I recently had a sestamibi scan in order to find a faulty parathyroid as diagnosed by high calcium and high PTH.  While they did not find the parathyroid tumor, the report did mention the following:
"Note is made of increased background activity including in the lungs suggesting possibility of parenchymal lung disease."
I am not a smoker and I have never had any lung problems.  Any information that you could share with me regarding this distressing sentence in my report would be greatly appreciated.  I did have a cold at the time the scan was done.

Sestamibi scans have been used in the past for pulmonary diagnosis but this incidental finding is a rather non-specific finding and should not be construed as diagnostic of pulmonary disease.  Either you or your doctor should ask the radiologist who interpreted this scan to specify the likelihood of the “increased background activity” being indicative of lung disease.  Assuming that your doctor knows you well, he/she would be aware of any other reasons to suspect lung disease.  If there is any other reason for suspicion, it could be useful to obtain a CT scan of your lungs along with spirometry.  If both are negative/normal, it might be reasonable to either ignore the sestamibi findings or seek another cause for the increased background activity.

Good luck.
