scattered interstitial fibrosis, bronchiectasis

I recently had a chest CT and the impression was as follows no axillary, hilas or mediastinal lymphadenopathy. normal heart size scattered interstitial fibrosis. more confluent capcity present medially within the right middle lobe likely representing scarring with bronchiectasis present. no pleural fluid.  I do have a follow up set with a pulmonary doctor but was curious as to what this means

The absence of lymph node enlargement is very good news, both in terms of infection and/or cancer.  Scattered interstitial fibrosis is common and, assuming widely scattered, of no significance.  That the “more confluent opacity” in the right middle lobe was deemed to represent “scarring” is also good news.  Scarring is usually the result of prior infection and bronchiectasis as well.  Of importance with bronchiectasis is the extent of it, the likelihood that it has served as a locus of infection and the degree of the pulmonologist’s suspicion that it may be associated with Mycobacterial infection including tuberculosis and nontuberculous mycobacterial infection.

You should be aware that comprehensive evaluation should include not only the CT findings but the clinical context in which they occur.

Good luck.
