Do I need to worry of having active Tuberculosis?

by vicente111, May 18, 2009 09:56AM
Is there a possibility that I will be positive in the sputum test and culture if my three previous xrays show no marking of TB minimal or Tb far advance but the readings have always been 'apical fibrosis?

Apical fibrosis is, especially when stable over time (years), for the most part, a residual of prior tuberculosis (TB) infection, currently inactive.  Thus it is very unlikely to be associated with a positive sputum test unless you have a history of recent exposure to a person with active disease.  However, should you have a positive tuberculin or a positive serological test for TB, depending on your age you might be a candidate for prophylactic therapy for TB.  If you are raising sputum, have it tested.

I suggest that you contact your local state TB surveillance office for further advice.
