Frequent Wheezing

by terrafire, Oct 18, 2008 07:54PM
I started wheezing lightly last Thursday night, got to sleep but woke up wheezing excessively i could only take short shallow breaths without coughing. I went to a GP the same day and was given a inhaler (Salbutamol). It doesn't feel like my lungs are 'closing up' but there is a tickling feeling in the lower part of my throat and i wheez a few times during the day (So i have to use the inhaler) could this be asthma or an allergy? The doctor said he thinks it's not Asthma.

This could be asthma and time will tell.  It could also be an episode of acute bronchitis that should in short time resolve completely.

One other possibility would be that you have aspirated a "foreign body".  For adults, this is usually a piece of food, peas being especially likely to be inhaled, either during a meal or with acid reflux, while asleep.  There are other causes of such wheezing and you should at least have a chest x-ray to screen for unsuspected disease.
