Lung lesion

by ek50, Nov 10, 2007 02:38AM
My mom is 70 and first had pneumonia 1.5 years ago when my brother passed away. She had it a second time 4 months ago. 2 months ago she fell and somehow got a chest xray that indicated she had a lesion on one of her lungs. Her doctor ordered her to have a PET scan. Is this invasive, serious or cancerous? She's healthy otherwise (has smoked her whole life and belatedly will give it up now)?

The PET scan is not invasive.  The lesion could be serious or cancerous or could be benign.  If the combination of PET scan and CT scan does not suggest that it is malignant or benign, your mom may have an autofluorescent bronchoscopy, possibly with a lung biopsy.  During this procedure a bronchoscope is passed through the nose into the windpipe to look into the lungs.  A bronchoscope is a flexible tube with a small camera at one end.  With the bronchoscope tiny pieces of lung tissue can be taken for further testing.  This is called lung biopsy.
Good luck
