Oxygen and COPD

I have COPD and Emphysema. I was started on Home Oxygen about a month ago. At night I use the home unit and a protable Oxygen Pack for day use. Neither one seems to help once I get to short of breath it dosen't seem to help. What good does it do to use oxygen if it dosen't work when you need it the most??

Bossman, I don't see how your oxygen could fail to help you, unless your lungs cannot absorb O2 very well, or exchange it for carbon dioxide, which we exhale.

The percentage of O2 in our atmosphere is a tad less than 20%. The percentage of O2 that is in your "Home Oxygen" is around 95%.

My wife has asthma and other lung conditions, and she receives Home O2. The guy that comes around and checks the O2 breathing air generator, and delivers new cannulas , always checks the percentage of O2 in the output of the generator. It is always around 95%. As you know, 100% O2 is very flammable or explosive.

I have tried my wife's air one time, but it burned my sinuses! I think that I had the flow rate adjusted too high. I have been diagnosed with COPD, but at this time, I can breathe well enough to not need O2.

If I were you, I would tell my doctor about this Home O2 not being helpful. Maybe you need to use an inhaler, such as albuterol, before you start the O2?

How do you score on your lung function tests?

Wishing you a better outcome with your dilemma,

Jack
