Yuck! Coughing Up Grey Phlegm

It has been suggested to me by my doc that I may have the bronchitis type copd, but never officially put on paper, although I have been prescribed 2 inhalers. I have always coughed up brown flecks in my phlegm. But now, I have been coughing up dark grey after having some chronically infected teeth pulled. Could this be a result of the local anesthetic injections, or a worsening of the copd? I can only get rid of bronchitis for about a month before it comes back every time. Antibiotics (doxicycline) seem to have the inside of my mouth raw, with white patches on my tongue and a few white blisters in mouth, also. Now I'm on Penicillin for the teeth. I am on chantix, too. Quitting after 37 years.

You should discus this change with your doctor.

The white patches and blisters are probably from thrush, an oral yeast infection.  It can be treated with diflucan very efffectively.  I have started gargling with warm normal saline when on antibiotics to keep that away.  It is quite painful.

It sounds like you have a yeast infection in your mouth from the antibiotics.  Your MD can give you another script for this(thrush).  Now, sometimes grey or white sputum comes from a smokers cough.  This is a average color for that in a smoker.  I dont think I would be alarmed unless it was yellow or green in color, these are signs of infection.  Make sure you take your inhalers as prescribed, this should help over time.  Good luck!
