COPD is the umbrella term that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.  The symbicort is good for reducing the inflammation (therefore narrows the breathing tubes) in the lung pathways.  It should help your bronchitis.

I was going to say the same things sk8flo said.  The combination medications which include inhaled steroids and a long acting broncho dilater like Advair, Symbicort and Dulera are standard treatments for all forms of COPD.  They are also used to treat asthma which cannot be controlled on inhaled steroids alone.

Since inhaled steroids almost killed me (and, in addition, caused my adrenals to malfunction) I am not a fan. I now use only natural anti-inflammatories and am more symptom free than I was using those poisons. The only medication I take is an Duoneb (albuterol/ipratropium) in a nebulizer. I have fairly severe COPD.

The best remedy I have found for chronic bronchitis are large doses of vitamin B5. B5 is a mucus thinner and an anti-inflammatory. There are no side effects. I take other stuff as well and have just added some Chinese herbs (under doctor's advice).

In February of this year the FDA stated that Advair should be used if nothing else works, and even then, only for short periods. The manufacturer does not lay much emphasis on deaths caused by Advair, a rather spectacular side effect.  I stopped using it because it caused severe bronchitis (which I thought mistakenly was part of a worsening illness). I stopped cold turkey after almost choking to death. And, guess what, I have mild chronic bronchitis.
