morgagni hernia causing COPD?

morgagni hernia causing COPD?

Recently, I was diagnosed with a 5 cm morgagni hernia extending into my right chest.  I have also been a lifetime sufferer of asthma.  Even tho the hernia doesn't bother me, the doctor recommended I have it removed.  I am almost 70 and if I had this hernia all my life, could it have been the cause of my chronic shortness of breath?

Do you think removing it would relieve my COPD?  It would not be a simple operation like a regular hernia would be.
Thanks for any suggestions.
