Yeah, I lost a BUNCH of weight. As long as you keep yourself fed eel with vitamins and minerals it's the best part of liver disease. I eat an Ensure once a day to keep the weight on now. I still get low on potassium but I take a pill for that m and a diuretic when needed. Keep reading right if possible. If not, Ensure.
It's not unusual for patients with advanced liver disease/end stage liver disease to lose a lot of weight. When the liver stops working properly, it is very difficult for the body to get all of the nutrients that it needs. Again, hopefully he is seeing a hepatologist. He should have a specialized diet prepared by a nutritionist in a hepatology clinic that would typically be low sodium, no red meat, limited/no iron, fresh fruits/vegetables (preferably organic), no herbal supplements or medications without the approval of his hepatologist, and a very careful balance of diuretics to manage his edema and ascites and monitored fluid intake.
Please take him to a hepatologist ASAP.
