Portal Hypertensive Gastropathy

Hello. I had my first OGD this week. There was one small varices in my oesphageous that doesn't need treating and no gastric varices were found.

The report did note portal hypertensive gastropathy and antral erosions. I don't see my gastro doc til next week. Can anyone give me any more information on what this means/possible treatment please? I have looked up some information but I can't make a lot of sense of it.

I have cirrhosis caused by alcohol. Sober since April.

Thank you.

Portal hypertensive gastropathy is a complication of cirrhosis caused by portal hypertension just as varices are. It is a change seen in the stomach lining mucus membrane. When varices and PHG are both found, preventative treatment is a non-selective β-blocker such as Nadolol daily to lower the portal hypertension and prevent future bleeding.

The antrum is the outlet of the stomach. Erosions (crater-like lesions) are damage to the stomach lining that can sometimes lead to gastritis or ulcers.

Please consult with your doctor for any needed treatment (s). Only your doctor knows you full heath situation.

Good luck.

Hi meadowbank,

Congrats on the no varices.  That's a great thing.  I'm not knowledgeable enough to advise you but others here are.  I just wanted to give you some moral support. :)

A huge congratulations on your sobriety!!!.  That is most important.
