Cough and Cold

For the last two weeks I have been having this really bad cough. It hurts in my chest when I cough and feels almost like I am trying to cough up a lung. And now my nose is starting to be runny and there is a lot of mucus that is now draining into my throat making it feel worse, and really sore. Is there any way to get rid of it?

As your condition has lasted for 2 weeks, make an appointment to see the doctor as soon as possible.

Coughing is the body's natural response to get rid of irritants, whether they are from viral, bacterial, fungal, smoke, dust, etc.

You should state the pregnancy part first.  While you are pregnant, your primary care giver is your obstetrician.  Make an appointment to get checked.  You could have pneumonia or whooping cough.

If you feel that the rubbish is in your lungs, you should make an appointment to get checked out.

Runny nose is a good sign that indicates there is no congestion in the sinuses.  To help, do steam inhalations.  Get a bowl and pour in boiled water from the kettle with some Vick or Olbas oil, bend your head over the bowl and cover your had and bowl with a towel.  Take care not to get scalded.  Breathe in the steam through your nose and out through your mouth.  Do this 4 times a day for a duration of 10 minutes each time.

Drink plenty of hot drinks, lemon and honey is nice and soothing.  Keep off milky drinks and milk products until you are OK again.  Milk encourages the formation of mucus.

You can buy over the counter throat lozenges to soothe your throat.

An examination of your lungs and throat by a doctor would confirm whether you have a viral or bacterial infection.  If the doctor feels that it is a bacterial infection he may prescribe suitable antibiotics for you.  If this is a viral infection, all you can do is to rest, take plenty of warm fluids (not milky) to ease your throat, throat lozenges and steam inhalations.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.
