Could this be a sinus infection or just allergies

by mel717, Dec 08, 2007 11:13AM
I do not have a sore throat ( it’s mildly red on either side and is sometimes scratchy), if at all it’s very mild and usually goes unnoticed.  I don’t have a runny nose except for on very few occasions.  My main concert is my sinuses draining down the back of my throat.  I feel this quite often and the strange thing is that it seems like it just sits near my gag reflex and makes me want to get sick.  I have to snort at times to get it out.  It’s kind of a yellowish color with a yucky smell. Oddly there isn’t much of it, it just seems to hang out right at the back of my throat and aggravate me. It isn’t something that I can just cough up; and I don’t have much of a cough.  I also notice that some days I have a bit of a dry mouth accompanied with this bad taste in the mouth, usually in the back of my mouth near my throat (on both sides mostly).  It seems that some foods taste differently, kind of bitter.  Sometimes it affects the way I eat and makes me want to gag, sometimes feel like throwing up. It is quite uncomfortable.  I don’t have a fever (temp usually between 97 & 98.5) though I feel tired a lot and I feel sinus pressure all over with headaches throughout the day.  I also get nauseated at times when I move around alot.

I have been going through this off and on for a while.  Went to the doctor about a month ago because I had trouble swallowing food, stomach was upset and I got acid reflux a lot at night. They prescribed me nexium which I take once each morning and it’s helped, but could this be causing some of my symptoms?

To relieve my sinuses though I thought I might take Sudafed decongestant.  I complained about this to the doc before but he looked up my nose & back of my throat and didn’t notice any infection.  Anyways this feeling comes and goes and it quite bothersome – looking for a  way to relieve it or advice if it sounds like something else.  Thanks.

That sounds like post nasal drip.

ask your doctor for nasal steroids

try over the counter saline nasal rinses
