Ear Infection

Hi,

I'm a first time mom...and I'm sure like many others, I have several concerns regarding my sons newly acquired ear infection and now cold.

He ran a fever for a couple of days which led to a visit to the docs office.  She diagnosed the suspected ear infection.  Prior to the visit, he had minor swelling in one of his eyes...and swelling in both eyes a couple of days after.  I brought this to the attention of the ped and she didn't make a big deal about it.  I was afraid that since hubby and myself are allergic to penicillin that he may be as well.

All but a very tiny bit of the swelling in his eyes has gone down, but this morning he woke up and he had minor swelling in the forehead area (the forehead area between his eyes).  I keep harping on the idea of being allergic to the amoxicillin, but he hasn't had any breathing probs, rash...or any of the other symptoms.  I spoke with the nurse about the eye swelling and she made the point that if the swelling was evident before taking the meds, that it's more than likely not the meds.

So, I guess my question is....having a cold and ear infection, should I expect to see swelling the said areas or should I have reason for further concern.   Thanks

Oh, he takes 400mg/5ml of amox 2 times a day 6ml per dose

he has finished taking the amox as of yesterday...today, he broke out in hives on his face arms and legs...maybe a spot or two on his chest...is this an allergic reaction to the amox...should i be worried about a swelling throat or anything else between now and the time i'm able to call a doc tomorrow?

Hi, My oldest daughter had the same thing when she was 1 yr. old., but the only part that swelled was her cheek on the side that she had the infection on. So that sounds strange, and for the amox; I'm allergic and I got hives too but my throat never swelled shut or anything, so hopefully that won't happen for your baby. How old is he? Have you tried a little benedryl to help with the itching from the hives? It will also help to subside the hives. Good luck. let me know.

thanks for the response

the night that he got the hives...i used a very little benadryl cream on the spots that were popping up.  I went to get oral benadryl..but dosing was for 6yrs and over.  So, I was able to get in touch with his pediatrician the following day...and he told me how to dose him.  The benadryl helped tremendously.  He woke up this morning hive free.

Both my husband and I are allergic to amox.  I questioned this, but the ped didn't seem to think it would affect him...and still doesn't think that's what he had a reaction to because it happened after he finished the meds.  When i had a reaction to it...i did swell, everywhere...luckily, i was able to get to hospital to get a shot...and prescrip for benadryl.   Thanks for the inupt...he's doing much better now..no ear infection, cold, nor hives.
