can flu cause lower backache and leg pain

my son (15 years old) has been sick and stayed home since last Thursday. Already saw doctor twice. He was diagnosed as having some sort of viral infection that is inconsistent with swine flu. He does not have a fever all these days. His symptoms are headache, bodyache, chest congested. cough. However, this morning he has sever lower backache and complains about leg and foot pain. Are these related to the riral infection. He is taking Advil (3 pills at a time) does not seem to help much.
