sore throat that wont go away

I've had this cold for a month now. I have seen a doctor and told me it was viral, that it needs to run it's course. but it's been a month. My symptoms are:
headache, tiredness, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, swollen throat (I choked on 1 NYQUIL tablet), stuffy nose, runny nose, clear mucus, cough.
I thought it might be allergies but my neighbor has the same thing, her kids had it but they got over it already. It seems like it might be going away for a couple days, then it comes back full force.
What is this?
