Get a parent to take you back to the doctor (see a different one for a second opinion) and if the doctor does not suggest it, ask your parent to request that you have a lung function test done.

In the UK the doctor can send you to the hospital to have a lung function test carried out, but he can also check your breathing at the appointment by you breathing into a tube (I forgot what this is  are called now).

This will show whether you have asthma.  And if so, you will be prescribed with an inhaler.

Sometimes, a cough that will not go away can be due to an allergy and that allergy can be to anything from dust, bed bugs, animal fur, smoke, perfumes, the list is endless.

Sometimes what happens is that you may get what is called "post nasal drip".  This is when the mucus drops down your throat from the sinus area causing an irritation and making you cough.

Coughing is actually the body's natural response to get rid of an irritant and that irritant can be anything as mentioned above when I spoke about allergies.  An irritant can also be a bacteria or a virus.

Drink plenty of warm diluted juices.  If you like it, a hot honey and lemon drink is nice and soothing.  Throat lozenges taken as recommended may also soothe the irritant in your throat (do read the instructions on the packet because some are not suitable for under 12 year olds).

If the doctor did not listen to your chest last time, then he should to ensure that you do not have a chest  infection and also examine your throat to see if there is any infection there.  If there is no infection an antibiotic will not be prescribed.

You may also find it helpful to rub some Vick on your throat and chest.  This will help you breathe more easily too.

You can also get a parent to place a bowl of hot water with some Vick in it so that the menthol vapours will be in the air to help with your breathing.  If you do have young children in the home, care must be taken so that they cannot reach the bowl of hot water.

Hope you start to feel better soon.

Best wishes.
