Diarrhea/bloating still persists a week taking Flagyl

by kobecat, Aug 07, 2008 09:42PM
I am 43 years old.  About 3 weeks ago I had an emergency hysterectomy.  After my hospital stay,  I was sent home with Clindamycin and Ampicillin capsules to take for 5 days.  I had diarrhea for 4 days straight and called the Dr.  She told me to stop taking the medicines immediately.  About 4 days later, I was stricken with severe abdominal cramping, nausea and watery diarrhea.  I was rushed to the emergency room and had CT scans, abdominal XRays, and stool samples taken.  I was diagnosed with C. diff.  After my second hospital stay, I was sent home with Metronidazole 500MG tablets to take with food 3X a day.  I am on my 8th day of taking this, and still have diarrhea with a loss of appetite.  When will the diarrhea clear up?  After the Flagyl treatment is completed?  Should I be taking a probiotic supplement along with the Flagyl?  I have no other symptoms other than the diarrhea/bloating.

Hi,
Diaarhea usually resolves within 2-4 days of starting on metronidazole. But the course of treatment should be completed.
Studies have shown that probiotics are beneficial in the treatment of clostridium difficile infection.

What are probiotics for C-diff? I have had it three times in less than two years after my ileostomy and tested positive each time. Flagyl will not clear it up so i have to take vancomycin. I am into my last two days of a ten day treatment and still having watery output. I am very tired and drained. All I want to do is sleep. No energy or spark for life i am just physically drained.

Any suggestions?
