Difference between Proctitis, Crohns Disease or Colitis

by PSC26, Mar 10, 2009 03:02AM
Dear Dr,

I have had what I think are symptoms for a few years. After doing loads of research I seem to have symptoms of both and perhaps others. My biggest issue is that I have mucus discharged from my rectum most days which is uncomfortable and embarrassing. I have taken a product called Asacol recommended by my Dr which does help temporarly. My fear is that this has gone on for ages and I am worried about my long term health and the possibilities of cancer.

I have been to a Gastro Dr and he has been inside, but his theory was that it was Proctitis but with my on going research I am worried he is wrong!

Can you please give me your thoughts?

Thanks

Hi,
Large bowel comprise of  colon, rectum and anal canal.
Inflammation of rectum is called proctitis.
Inflammation of the colon is called colitis.
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory condition which can affect any part of the GI tract from mouth to anus.
Mucus discharge could indicate colitis. Colonoscopy and biopsy with histopathological examination need to done.
