Inflamed and sore

So, I don't know the technical term for this, but there is above the anus at the top of the crack a hole that is seemingly useless. Right were the tailbone is sort of. Well, I noticed some discomfort today and the next time I went to the restroom I took a glance in the mirror. To my surprise, all around that area was red and inflamed. What is the technical term for that part of the body, and should I be concerned that It's irritated? I am a 26 year old female, no kids, and relatively healthy.

Hi Baboon,
The description given by you seems more of an infection and inflammation.
Without more details or without seeing the lesion it is difficult to say what it is. It could be any of the following -

1.Perianal abscess
2. Fistula in ano
3. Hidradenitis
4. Pilonidal sinus

Consult your physician who could examine it and come to a conclusion. You need to get treated as the lesion may cause more discomfort and other problems
