Possible Colitis?

by Blindside462, Jun 29, 2009 12:16PM
I am a 27 y/o male, 6ft, 200 lbs, generally in good health.  I have had prolonged Diarrhea for roughly two months now.  I would not classify it as "chronic" as I only use the restroom 1-2 times daily, if that.  Sometimes I go two days without having to use the restroom. Every 3 weeks or so I have a severe bout which sends me in 6-8 times.  It has not affected my weight (as I seem to be gaining more lately...) or appetite, in an adverse way.  I am concerned it might be colitis or some other more severe gastrointestinal illness beyond food poisoning or a bacterial imbalance,  I cut dairy out of my diet for a week or so with no change, and have even tried taking probiotics (as I don't normally eat yogurt or chesse anyway) and have seen no improvement. I have scheduled an appointment with my doctor.  Are there other symptoms I should be noticing or concerned about?  Are there any changes I should be making to my diet?

Hi,
Chronic diarrhea could be due to pancreatic, intestinal, hormonal problems.
Look for other associated symptoms like abdominal pain, weight loss, blood and mucus in stool, oily stools, foul smelling bulky stools.
Stool examination, colonoscopy and if needed CT scan of the abdomen may be done for evaluation.
