can this be caused by a virus or eating the wrong thing?

my 16 year old daughter was diagnoised with celiac disease. She went in the ER with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and after ablood work and CT scan I was told she had an ovarian cyst rupture and had a white cell count of 21000. my 18 year old son was also diagnosed with aulcerative colitus. He went to the ER with high fever, sever abdominal pain, chills, severe diaria, and blood in his stool.  both were in the hospital within the same two weeks. What are the chances of that? My son seems to be better after getting medication but my daugter seems to still be slugish. Could something that we ate or a virus bring on therse conditions? It seems that they are on a lot of medication now and it just seems so odd that both were diagnoised with digestive problems. looking for more answers!

Hi,
Though the symptoms occured within 2 weeks it need not be of the same cause.
An ovarian cause may be a possibility in your daughter which could have been diagnosed with the help of imaging studies.
In your son it could be colitis  and the cause of colitis can be confirmed with colonoscopy and if needed biopsy.
I can tell more about these if you can tell me about the various tests that were done.

Weird. Did the respective diagnoses for son and daughter come AFTER they were admitted to hospital?
