dry heaves with flare-up

I have a moderate flare-up from ulcerative colitis. I have had problems with nausea and dry heaves this time, though. I've had them before, but only when i've been severely sick and underweight. I just keep feeling bile (or whatever that is) coming up my stomach and dry heaving while i'm going to the bathroom. Its usually when I am somewhat hungry. What could they be caused by?
