What usually happens if there is no transfusion? .
94 yr. man with continually low hemoglobin 7.5 even after 5 transfusions. It goes up to 8 or 9, but then drops again. What usually happens if there is no transfusion? .

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Cells need oxygen to live. And oxygen to all cells is carried via the RBCs or red blood cells. So, if the hemoglobin values stay low, there could be vital organs damage. Besides this the workload on the heart increases and in turn it does not receive enough oxygen. So, to maintain good oxygen flow to all organs, the hemoglobin levels need to be maintained.
