Anal spasms after anterior resection

by woefie, Jun 21, 2009 04:12PM
My father in-law is back in hospital for the 4th time after his anterior resection on the 12th March.  He suffers from intense anal spasms and pains.  He says it feels as if he has to go to the bathroom almost all the time , but when he gets there it was a "False Alarm".  Whenever it is not - he gets a cramp mostly on the right side of his anus and then terrible spasms follow.  This lasts for hours.  He has lost 10 kg already and I am very worried about him.  The doctors can't seem to give him any answers at to what is going on and they just put him on pain medication - pethadene and cortisone - everytime that he gets admitted for the pain.  They have not done any more tests, scans etc.  Can someone please let my know if you have experienced the same post operative symptoms and if so what advice can you offer.....
