Discomfort along my hip crease

I've got this vague sensation along or just inside my hip crease on the left side. My PCP says incipient hernia, and that probably is a good diagnosis. I'm 44 and play ice hockey so that would make sense. However I also had literally decades of GI issues that I only recently pinned down to being caused by gluten. No colon cancer in my family, nor in my extended family that I'm aware of.

My sensation is not what I would call pain. It's at worst uncomfortable at times, and I notice it most when I'm sitting or folding over as if to stretch my hamstrings. Driving with the seatbelt going across my lap for a while can start to be uncomfortable. My "rational" brain says it's likely not a tumor in my colon, but I've had a few health problems the last few years which have made me a bit paranoid about what's going on with my body these days. If a colonoscopy was no big deal, I'd probably go ahead and ask for one, but that's not really the case. I know the smart thing to do here is to get a second opinion from a hernia specialist, but thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts on this.

Thanks!

Pencil thin stools that persist needs to be checked out.  They can happen from time to time but when they remain pencil thin, you need to get checked out.  You could have a partial blockage, or a polyp causing the stool to be thin. I would see a Gastro doc for an evaluation and go from there.  You're close enough to 50 when polyps can develop, but they can also form earlier.  I think this will worry you until you do this, why put yourself through all this guessing...see the Gastroenterologist since this is his specialty and get some answers.  Keep us posted....you may be able to help others in what you learn.  Take care!

Thanks for the link. I've done some reading on the sports hernia. It's kind of confusing because there seems to be different terminology used by different doctors to describe what may be the same injury, or not. Hard to tell sometimes from the different descriptions you find out there. I'm big on second opinions also, but maybe more in theory than in practice. I seem to need to work up past a certain level of concern to get there. This discomfort doesn't really prevent me from doing anything and there are no others symptoms. It's mostly just slightly... Annoying. Just enough that I can't ignore it so I'm probably close to getting that second opinion.

On the off chance that behind this is trouble brewing in my colon, are there any symptoms that I should be aware of? Aside from blood? I've also read about the pencil-thin stools. Is that something you would see consistently? As in the whole thing is skinny, every time? Or just sections with some movements?

I'm big on second opinions.  Below is a website that may shed some light on what you're dealing with and they mention "ice hockey" as one of the culprits for this type of hernia.  We all have to start getting colonoscopies at age 50, so if you feel it would give you peace of mind to have one...it's not to soon to get started.  I hope this helps and wish you all the best.
