What foods should you Avoid if you only have a small portion or your Colon?

My 80 year old father was diagnosed with Stage 1 Colon Cancer in September 2010.  He had surgery to remove a portion of the colon but was back in the hospital the following week with an infection. He now only has 1/4th of his colon resulting in diahrria. I am my fathers caregiver and would like to know if there are any foods that I should avoid cooking for him or any foods that actually help reduce the number of trips to the restroom.  Also does anyone know if there are medications that a doctor could prescribe to help? My father does not want to go back to the doctor because he is doctored out for a while but if he knew that something might help I may be able to convice him to see his doctor again.
Any and all answers would be very helpful. Thank You! Dadscaregiver.

I had a near total colectomy with ileorectal anastasmosis. i have 6 inches from the rectum ,it's been 5 mths, things i have tried to lessen bathroom trips. i started with metamucil daily, in the am first dose starts to work by next morning, and if taken daily then it really helps, it absorbes the water. stay away from raw fruits and veggies, cook veggies really well, since my surgery i dont digest properly,i mash my veggies so I get the nutrients from it more.no greasy foods, refined sugar and deserts containing sugar produce more liquid stools. look up a low fiber low residue diet, it is like going back to basics and it is for a short time once bowels are back under control then add foods one at a time to see what he can and cant' tolerate. take liquid vitamins, and drinks with vitamins in them, mostly vitamin water. lomotil 2.5mg prescription , or imodium (immodium) ( can be purchased at most pharmacies, this is what i use when i need to stop watery bm's and it does work, but dont overdue it though)will stop trips to washroom but you need to be careful that he doesn't take too much or he will be really constipated. transient times are faster with colon surgery meaning things go through us a bit more quickly, so the imodium (immodium) slows that down,  i can eat cooked and mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnip, broccoli tops, cabbage is a no no as is onions seeds and nuts and dont eat skin of foods, apples, potatoes etc...anything that  can't be digested has the potential to stay in bowel and build up and cause a blockage...

i had this surgery march 9th 2011 and by june 11 2011, i was able to take a 3600 km trip, and that's each way, it can be managed but you need to be really careful. when getting medications, he needs to ask where they digest, if in small bowel or stomach that is good. but some meds digest in colon which is an issue if you have none or very little colon.  cheese, tapicoca pudding and bananas help bulk up, anything white is easy on small bowel for digestion, white rice macaroni, white bread. i keep my fiber intake to a minimum and fat content too.. less if better in this case....
hope i have helped you .......
