When does the recovery of hemicolectomy get easier?

Hello-first time poster to this forum.  I had been struggling with bowel issues since my breast cancer dx and tx in 2005.  From the moment the struggles began, I was simply told, "You have IBS, take a laxative or Immodium."

Well, off and on I would notice that my bowel movements looked a little dark over those next few years.  A few months ago, it was clearly WRONG.  I actually posted my question on the IBS forum here (with no answers) because I was terrified.

I told my NEW PCP, after firing my previous PCP for totally ignoring the very issue at hand and giving me scripts that had adverse interactions, and he was the first doc to listen.  He had me do the home test, I tested positive for blood, and had a colonoscopy.

I woke up several times during the procedure, which I had hoped would be the worst part of the experience. Instead, the doc said, "You had 2 polyps.  I removed one.  You'll need surgery for the other.  It looks suspicious.  It could be cancer."

For most, this would floor people and leave them in tears.  I was oddly not stunned.

I had the rt. hemicolectomy on April 3rd, and recovery has SUCKED to say the least.  I had a very lousy nurse's aide on the first night, and she would come in and yank a pillow from behind me or from my head without warning.  The result was the WORST pain/spasm/cramping I have ever had in my life. She was then supposed to help me walk in the morning, and yanked me out of the bed without warning.  Again, horrifying spasms.

On day 6, I was released from the hospital.  I was home for a glorious 3 days and had to go to the ER for the horrible pain I was experiencing.  My surgeon told me to take more Vicodin and use a hotpad.  It didn't help a bit.

Turned out I had a UTI, but they were checking me for further infections, as I would wake up in the morning with a huge fever and convinced I was going to vomit.

I was released 5 days later.  I was home for a glorious 3 days AGAIN when I began to feel the worst I have ever felt in my life.  Everything hurt, I had a fever, I couldn't move my legs, and I had constant diarrhea.

I was put on Flagyl (on it right now), and definitely admit that I began to feel better the moment I took the first one.  My issue now?

My entire right side just HURTS.  It is a dull hurt that won't go away.  I called the surgeon and he told me to take Celebrex.  It hasn't helped.  He feels it is post-op pain, because I am feeling better with the Flagyl.  Why isn't it going away?!?!  I've had a CT scan, my liver/gallbladder/and pancreas are allegedly normal.

Is this just what is expected during recovery?   When does it get easier?  I have had 14 surgeries (this is my 3rd cancer diagnosis), and this is the hardest recovery of my life.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.  peanut
