need advise on home care for colon cancer patient

hello,
my grandfather just recently got out of the hospital to remove the cancer from his colon. he now has a colostomy bag and i am helping to care for him during his recovery at home. my question is about emptying the bag over the toilet. when we do that, his genitals sometimes touch the toilet water. I am hoping someone can give me some advise on how to avoid this other than to tell him to hold himself when i am emptying the bag. i am very new to this so really ANY advise you have for me would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! thank you in advance.

If he is able, it's best to have him kneel by the toilet, only the bag should be over the water.  If he is not able to kneel, or if it's difficult for him....... get a bucket, put some water in it and let him empty his bag into the bucket and you can just flush it away.  Sometimes you can keep a small stool by the toilet, have him sit sideways on it and have him hold the bag over the water and empty it.  I hope this helps and I wish you both all the best
