I underwent a total colectomy in 2004 and, in response to another Medhelp patient's question, I posted my experiences on:-

Hi,
I can understand your concerns. If your grandfather is otherwise fit without any major illness like diabetes or hypertension, then he should be withstand the surgery quite well. The exact extend of the colon cancer will be known only at the time of surgery. If the spread is more, then resection of a part or whole of the colon may be necessary. Also then a colostomy can good nursing care may be necessary.
Hope this helps.
