HDL supplements
About This Community:

This forum is for questions and support regarding acupuncture, chiropractic, dietary supplements, herbal remedies, homeopathy, naturopathic medicines and treatments.

Complementary medicine is used in conjunction with conventional medicine. For example, aromatherapy can be used to help lessen a patient's discomfort following surgery. Alternative medicine is used in place of conventional medicine. For example, acupuncture may be used instead of surgery for back pain that has been recommended by a conventional doctor.

HDL supplements

ust wanted to let everyone know that I had a physical, and my measurement of cholesterol was 223.  Normally, that would be borderline high, but it was actually considered quite good by my doctor because my LDL was low, my triglycerides were low, but my HDL was so high it threw my whole cholesterol count to the high side, but on the good high side.  The reason I'm putting this on here is because I take Barleans Flax Oil caps (four a day, not very many), and Nordic Naturals Omega 3 caps (7 per day).  The high HDL would seem to indicate these are being assimilated, which is the hardest part of taking supplements -- finding a brand that actually is absorbed well.  So just wanted to let everyone know.  Also wanted to comment on PSA testing, or Prostate Specific Antigen.  This is a test used to determine if a person might have prostate cancer brewing.  Mine was a bit high, 2.1, which is to be expected since I have an enlarged prostate, but far too low to require any invasive search for cancer.  The interesting part was the physician asked me first if I wanted the test.  Because of a family history of prostate cancer, I said yes, but the reason he asked was new guidelines that question the value of some of these basic diagnostic tests, including mammography.  The question is, given that most positives are false positives, is it worse in terms of anxiety and unnecessary biopsies to do these tests at all?  I don't know the answer to this question, particularly relating to mammography which can be much faster growing than prostate cancer, but I found it interesting to be asked.  Just thought I'd share this.

That is great Paxiled. I understand that supplements like the flax oil and Omega 3 oils can be hard to assimilate. I bet your doctor was surprised.

Yes, I have read in some of my health journals that the doctors are thinking differently about some of these tests and they are starting to feel they may not be a necessary as it was thought to be in the past. Things are always changing in the good ole medical field, sort of interesting, I think.

Anyway, that is good news, thanks for sharing.

The doctor also complemented me on my fine firm rounded breasts, and asked me which soy products I use, as he seemed jealous.  Wonder how long this lasts before it gets deleted!

I also feel bad they've never compared my prostate to a piece of fruit yet.  I feel cheated.

Studies have shown that drinking hibiscus tea can effectively lower high blood pressure and reduce high cholesterol levels in many individuals!  Read an article about it in the February 1, 2009 issue of Internal Medicine News.
