Oil of Oregano-Dosage Suggestions?

I've read that Oil of Oregano has beneficial antibacterial and antifungal properties.  As a co-infected Lyme patient with yeast problems, sounds like a win-win.

Does anyone have experience taking this, or have suggestions for how much to take?  Should I start small and build up?  Also, I'm on antibiotics and various supplements.  If anyone knows if this should be taken at a separate time from other meds, that'd also be useful info to me.

Thanks.

I could, but it would be complicated.  I'd start with a liver cleanse and then move on to the lungs, but the problem with tobacco isn't clogged lungs, it's damaged lungs.  I don't know how to undo the damage, though you've done the best thing by quitting smoking so the body has a chance to heal itself now.  I'd also make sure my diet was loaded with antioxidants (green leafy vegetables especially) and start taking some seaweed or algae for detoxification purposes (this is used for people exposed to radiation, so it's pretty mainstream that algae helps to clean toxins out of the system).  But I think you'd be better served to see a naturopath or herbalist or practitioner of integrated medicine who could give you a program to follow -- you're not going to react to everything well so there's some experimentation involved.  But eating well and exercising so things flow well is where I'd start, and liver cleansing as well, as that's where the body stores toxins it can't get rid of.

Don't know about its use for that.  Its main use is as an anti-fungal, and some skin rashes are fungal in nature.  Did the vet give a diagnosis of what kind of skin rash it is?  There are holistic vets out there -- I had one for years for my dog, but she moved out of state.  Maybe you can find one.

Sorry, looks like I lost part of a sentence -- meant to say most of the good small health food stores that started this whole movement have been forced out of business by Whole Foods.

Can't say I know anything about Young Living, but from its website it's still another of Utah's many many multilevel organizations, most of which are ponzi schemes.  This may be a great product, or it may be completely bogus.  There's a reason these companies exist -- they make money by selling product and by charging those who sell their products, like Avon or Tupperware.  But with supplements, they also do this because they don't have to go through the experienced middlemen at health food stores who know scams when they see them.  By avoiding store shelves, they avoid random checks by the groups that do them to see if the product matches the label.  I'm glad you're getting good results, but the oils at a good health food store are as pure as you can get if you buy the best products -- I'm assuming by now everyone knows to stay away from GNC and its ilk.  Unfortunately, most of the small health food stores that had a mission other than just making money.  I managed these stores for years, and we would never sell these multilevel products because they would never share with us any independent verification of their quality -- most of them were cults, and many have been busted for being scams.  The internet provides a perfect place for them to sell their products.  I don't know where you got the info that the oils in health food stores were not pure -- how would you know?  Unless you have the very expensive equipment in your home to test them.  So I go by reputation, especially of the people who started the companies.  I like them to be old line master herbalists or naturopaths and I like them to sell them in the open, not in secret.  I want them to be willing to withstand the scrutiny of store shelves.  I'm not saying this to get you personally to change anything, just in case anyone else reads your post and ends up getting misled.  As for fillers, I'm not sure what you mean -- an essential oil by definition has no fillers, if it does it it's not an essential oil.  But they do have to have alcohol in them, since that's the extractive agent, and they often have oil added -- usually olive oil -- in many cases, which doesn't detract from the oil's purity but allows it to stay on the body and provides a medium for the essential oil.  Different oils have different stabilities.  Again, this isn't for you to change, you're apparently getting good results, but you can save yourself some time by buying Gaia's oregano oil already in gel caps, but I wouldn't change if I were getting good results.  Just again setting the record straight for others who might read this and start buying off the internet, which can be very beneficial but can be more likely to be a scam.

I buy mine from Young Living oils..it is pure oregano oil... no fillers.. Most health food stores do not sell the purest forms of oils, which is perplexing.  Oregano oil and Lemongrass oil especially have helped me with both bacterial as well as fungal infections.  I have been advised to take mine in a vegetarian capsule and usually begin with 3 -6 drops of Oregano oil every 4 hours for yeast infection and 6-10 drops of Lemongrass oil for bladder, or sinus infections every 4 -6 hours.  Good luck.

Not sure at all what you're talking about.  Many companies make oregano oil, it's very easy to find from any major supplement e-retailer or health food store.  And it's never 100%, it's an oil, which means there's oil added, and it's extracted from the oregano, which means some has to be lost.  And it's shipped as any other supplement is shipped.  I know, I used to manage health food stores, and I use it.  Personally prefer Gaia's gel caps, because the liquid is very strong to the taste and on the throat, and it's a well respected old-line extract manufacturer from before this stuff became big business.  But to each one's own.

Camden-grey in Miami have 100% Oregano oils. Since it is considered a hazard material, shipping is ground only and a bit more expensive. Check them out online

Now Foods is a discounter, and in the past has been unreliable as to the content of their products.  Although they have gotten better over the years, I still wouldn't buy their products -- too unreliable.  As to the drops, oregano oil tastes very strong, but you're not supposed to take extracts under the tongue. A lot of people think you do, but you don't, you drink them with a little water so they get digested as food.  It's not sublingual.  You can also get very high quality extract in caps by Gaia, which is what I use.  There is some reflux of the taste, but nothing like the liquid extract.  You hardly notice it.  As to dosage, the liquid extract is usually just a few drops, and it should say on the bottle, but with herbs the most important thing is usually the frequency you take them and whether with or without food, but as I say, I now use the liquid phyto cap by Gaia.  It's important not to take this all the time as a general rule, as it's an anti, and presumably when the fungal infection goes away there's no more reason to take it.  As to the Lyme person, oregano oil is not know for anti-bacterial properties, though it certainly has some, but mostly as an anti-fungal.

I have chronic lyme and used this awhile back and I plan on starting it up again. Best thing for me to do was but the.drops and empty veg caps so u.com start out slow and gradually increase without having this potent stuff in your mouth. I found the pre filled caps way too potent and had one heck of a herx. Hope this helps.

The problem I am finding that, depending on which Oregano Oil you buy, the amount of oil is different. I bought one from "now" and it says it is a 25% oil blend.  It is mixed with Olive Oil. Can't seem to find out how many drops to take.

I only shop in health food stores -- don't trust drug store brands -- so there really isn't much choice there.  The one I use is Nature's Way, not because it's the best but because it's one of the few that features reuteri in one of its products.

The best way to take tinctures, including oregano oil, is to swallow it with water.  Putting it under the tongue won't help, because it has to be digested; it's not sublingual.  And oregano oil burns like hell that way, so why bother?  If you check with professional herbalists, especially the ones who manufacture tinctures, they will tell you this.  Oregano oil only needs very small doses, a couple of drops at first, and shouldn't be taken on a regular basis.  No antibiotic should be.  Once the yeast infection is gone, stop taking the oregano oil.  And start taking probiotics, especially one that contains reuteri; if your probiotics are at home candida can't move in.  The problem with Lyme is, so many on it are taking antibiotics in large doses, and those kill off the beneficial bacterial as well as the bad, and with repeated doses of antibiotics it becomes very difficult for the beneficial to ever repopulate themselves.  so it's a toughie.  Dietary changes may also be necessary, such as eliminating wheat and dairy, to reduce chronic inflammation and to attract less candida simple sugars should be kept to a minimum.  P'au Darco is also helpful with yeast.  So is colloidal silver, but oregano oil is probably the strongest natural anti fungal.

For sinus infections, oregano oil probably won't help much -- it's a mild antibiotic, but more for fungus.  Colloidal silver is the strongest natural antibiotic; others are goldenseal, myrrh, olive leaf (though it's stronger on viruses), and many other herbs.  However, make sure you see a doctor and get it diagnosed -- just because your sinuses hurt doesn't mean there's a bacterial infection.  It could just be inflamed for any number of reasons.  And if it's chronic or very serious, then you're probably going to have to antibiotics, which is a bummer but that's why they invented them.  But if its mild, you may be able to treat it.  I'd see a naturopath if you don't know herbs that well, because combinations would be used, not a single herb.  Same with the yeast; it's usually a combination treatment, not a single remedy.  Some homeopathic remedies are also good for sinus infections; for that, it's best to see a homeopathic physician.  Most naturopaths aren't that good at homeopathy.

I love the stuff! I use to be very faithful in taking it....in fact i need to get back on it! lol
I take the North American Herb & Spice brand as it is a good trusted brand. I would start out with 2 drops under tongue for as long as you can stand it (it can get hot and spicy...lol) and then swallow down with water. Work your way up from there. I will check my Lymes protocols with the additional use of Oregano and see what is suggested with dosage. I use to take 6 drops per day and it always helped me to feel better. I also use it topically (it stinks like spagetti sauce spices...lol) whenever my neck hurts or throat hurts....around my ears if they hurt....chest if my lungs or bronchii hurt....etc. It truly is amazing stuff.
You may very well experience die-off with this so go gradual.
It also gave me an energy boost! You can take this at any time of the day. I always take my naturals at least 1-2 hrs from meds, depending upon what you are taking.
It is a antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal.....etc.
