Stroke and Fish Oil  -- An analysis of 38 studies concluded that eating fish regularly is associated with fewer strokes, but fish oil supplements do not seem to help. Interestingly, the type of fish and how it is prepared seem to make all the difference. For details, including what fish oil supplements can or cannot do, see the updated Fish Oil & Marine Oil (Omega-3) Supplements

Flax Oil has more Omega 6 than Fish Oil (EPA + DHA). It is recommended to vegans who do not eat meat or fish, and also for some whose digestion finds fish oil hard to take at effective dose of min 1000mg 3 times a day, preferably with food.
Using Diet Sprite Lemonade or a Mineral water (the bubbles help) assists both swallowing and digestion of the many supplements I now have. Increasing age now further adds to the permanent damage to the nervous system and body functioning already coming from initial spinal injuries from 2 separate car accidents, a subsequent failed fusion, the ongoing medication "interactions+side-effects" over the long search for adequate pain relief - while continuing to search for treatments(traditional & complementary) that assist; then the particular after-effects posed by the essential 2 complex Neurosurgeries ... with symptoms increasing in spread & intensifying, plus added neurological effects.
I personally use an integrative combination of hypnosis for pain relief(incorporating self-hypnosis & guided imagery drawing on what comes from my own experience & background), acupuncture, brainwave entrainment using holosync brainwave technology to go into deeper states of mind+body relaxation to encourage the body's own healing/balance (eg Centre-pointe Institute, www.Meditate.com.au) ... along with additional methods as needed - like laser therapy that has recently been added after positive results from pain/swelling management in progressive lymphoedema research/treatment centres, using individualised programs of focussed imagery & changing the breathe cycle, plus incorporating Eastern & European practices that have stood the test of time from use of herbs, aromatherapy, antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatories (eg fever-few, bromelain, devil's claw, gotu kola etc) ... along with use of colour, music (traditional + alternative + cultural) with changes in rhythm/pitch/pattern, body chakras, reiki at various levels, ki force and energy healing.
Add all these to the more focussed guidance beginning to emerge more coherently from the behavioural sciences in positive psychology (eg.HappinessInstitute.com, the Calm Centre) ... being careful to TAKE AWAY the HYPE of Advertising & not trade on the vulnerability of people who "hurt" each and every day...
then MAY BE one CAN now look forward to "with time" re-building one's often shattered personal self confidence and recapture a semblance of one's former self image ... and then go forward to build a compassionate new network of more accepting, "genuine" and encouraging friends and colleagues.
As both a therapist and long time sufferer of severe pain (constant & unremitting, while intensifying with increasing damage over 30 years - the only incidences of "NO Pain" being in deep hypnosis or some parts of brief sleep!) I now help others when possible by phone or online (mp3s + messenger) ... while the "research" part of me continues to look - when I can actually hold a book/journal to read .. AND when I can get the 2 fingers I can still use to type ... I will continue to search for new ideas/methods etc & integrate research & treatments. I will keep you posted - now I must "Go to bed and REST" ... (heard that before?)
Sending EACH of you a Rainbow of Caring Companionship ...  "om shanti" - etherapist

You could, but you won't be getting the EPA and DHA that are found in fish and that the American Heart Association recommends. There are flavored forms of fish oil
available that are not unpleasant to take.

Or you could get the kind, I think it is called enteric coated, that has no flavor until it reaches the small intestines--where absorption takes place.

Theoretically yes, however there are many brands of flax oil and the composition is different. On the other hand there are a number of well documented studies involving fish oil. The fish oil comes in various flavors, by the way. Orange, lemon. It isn't that bad.
