Has anyone tried isocort? It is mainly for adrenal issues.  It is a naturopathic treatment.

yes....i remember you and I having a discussion about it....did you get it from Helen Pensanti online?

by margypops, Jul 16, 2009 08:38PM
I got them and they did make me feel good for a while then I had some sleeplessness and stomach upsets but they definatly made me feel good and gave me energy.I took them for a few weeks.

I personally don't like using animal organs, and others do.  Organs store toxins.  I prefer using the herbs, such as ashwagandhal, eleuthero, the ginsengs, and other adaptogens that help balance the adrenals.  Still, many swear by them.  A company called Michael's makes formulas that combine organs with appropriate herbs.

I did get them from Dr. P's website. They do help, but I am afraid of getting addicted to them.

Some people use hydrocortisone creme(otc) for adrenal support.

I am going to see if I can find out if the isocort is addictive, as I believe they helped. I just need some sleep,,,,,,,

Cortisone is not good for balancing adrenals.  Since it weakens the immune system, partly by killing off beneficial bacteria, it increases long-term inflammation, thereby forcing the body to work harder, thereby increasing stress on the adrenals.  That's why cortisone is strictly limited to short duration use in all but the most extreme cases.

Peggy- I switched to an adrenal adaptogen and am doing great on them. The glandulars never worked really well for me, but the adaptogen I am on is working great. It has a blend of some of the things Pax said and some other things.
I agree that cortisone should only be used if your blood tests are showing that much adrenal insufficiency......should not be used for adrenal weakness.
Your still not sleeping?????
I am taking Calm magnesium drink at night to help me sleep and it works.

by peggy64, Jul 25, 2009 08:24AM
Laura,  Still not sleeping. Those hormones, adrenaline and cortisol are HORRIBLE coursing through all during the night.

I have tried that Calm product, and it does not help. I am now on BHRT, and taking lots of licorice and other adaptagens.

Isocort is not something I take everyday. I don't want to become dependent on it. I don't think the cortisone in it is the same as in cortef, because it is from an animal adrenal cortex. But, I don't want to take any chances.

Did you have any saliva testing done for your adrenals? How do you know they are weak and not off in timeclock. Your adrenals could be producing too much cortisol during the night and not enough during the day.
This is where using an adaptogen is beneficial. Over time it will correct when you are producing too much.....or when you are not producing enough.
What bioidentical hormones are you on???

by Paxiled, Jul 25, 2009 05:42PM
Be careful with the licorice -- it can cause high blood pressure.  Eleuthero and ashwhagandha and other adaptogens are better for the adrenals.  You might also try d.o.n.g. quai and maybe even Chinese ginseng if you think you need some strong yang to an overly yin condition.  And have you tried the holy basil for the cortisol?  Usually the adrenals are weak from overproducing, not underproducing.  Just a thought, not a diagnosis.

I guess I was wondering just what ingredients are in Isocort other than what's listed on the label. Dried adrenal cortex is not the same as cortisol or hydrocortisone therefore safe to take. My MD has me on 5mg of hydrocortisone to boost my adrenals and replace what they're not making. I don't really see a difference between Isocort and Drenamine by Standard Process for that matter. Drenamine contains "bovine adrenal PMG extract" while Isocort contains "freeze dried adrenal cortex". Others have posted that Isocort contains 2.5 mg of cortisol per tablet yet this isn't listed in the ingredients. Sort of scared to take added cortisol unless it's a natural substance that won't adversely affect my taxed adrenals. But if it's good and it works, I'm willing to try. Don't like the synthetic stuff.

I still highly recommend an adrenal adaptogen rather than glandular supplements. That way you dont have to worry about over dosaging yourself.
