5 year old cutting molars

I have a 5 1/2 year old son who has not lost any teeth yet but started complaining of pain in the back area of his gums.  I assume he is cutting his molars, but I do not feel anything.  How long does it take molars to come in once you have the onset of pain?  What are the symptoms, and what is the best way to manage the pain?

It appears that 6 year molar( 1 st  permanent molar) is erupting, and there is pericoronitis present. Seeing a pediatric dentist is advised.
