Bone Graft Money Grab?

Bone Graft Money Grab?

Hi Doc..

I'm a healthy 43 year old male. I ate too many candies as a kid and brushed too little! As a result, I have a molar (#36) that has had one to many fillings and my cap just doesn't have enough to hold on to any more. The molar was just at gum line, so it was recommended that it be pulled and I get an implant. It was successfully pulled. At my follow up visit to see how the gum was healing, the oral surgeon suggested that I get a bone graft to shore up the bone. I floss every day, brush every day several times, and while I have a lot of fillings, have relatively healthy gums. His argument was that the back bone ridge (closest to my tongue) was lower than the front bone ridge (closest to my cheek) where the tooth was pulled and it needed to be shored up. He went on about a lot of stuff as to what could happen if I didn't get the graft. But I just don't get it. My gut tells me that I don't need it. It costs about 800 dollars, which is a lot, but I can pay it. I just don't think I need to put  myself through that extra step when I'm otherwise healthy and feel the hole left by the extraction would naturally fill in. What do you think?
