Ibuprofen and vicodin

I was prescribed Vicoden and pennisilin by an oral surgeon because he is unable to pull my tooth for over a week. I am 3 hours away from being able to take another vicoden. It still hurts and if I continue to eat vicoden they will not last until I have my appt. for the extraction. Can I take ibuprofen in the mean time without any adverse effects? Is it safe and will it have any effects on the prescribed medications?
