Jaw Pain that won't subside

by Cookie919, Aug 29, 2009 06:41PM
I went to the dentist about a month ago and had to get a filling in one of my teeth.  I kept having problems after the filling.  Sometimes when I would chew on either side of my mouth, I would experience a sharp pain that would go away in a few moments.  Earlier this week I went back to the dentist where he did an X-ray and decided to readjust my bite.  It didn't help--the pain continued and it seemed to spread to my lower jawbone and my left ear.  I went back to the dentist again yesterday (saw a different doctor) and they did X-rays again.  She determined that I had a crack in the tooth directly behind the one that was filled.  She placed a temporary crown on the tooth and I have to go back next week for the permanent crown.  The problem is that I am still having terrible pain in my jaw.  The pain has gone away when I bite or chew and the tooth is no longer sensitive to cold as it was before but the jaw pain is awful.  It still seems to be radiating to my ear.  I told her all about this yesterday.  Should I have had a root canal before placing a crown on the tooth?  She didn't give me an antibiotic so I don't guess that she thought that there was any kind of infection.  I'm scared to have the crown placed on my tooth now because I think that I'm still going to end up having a root canal down the road--even though the tooth itself does not hurt--just the jawbone and the ear.  She said that I wouldn't get a lot of relief until the permanent crown is placed but I am not getting much relief at all.  Should I just go ahead and have the permanent crown placed and hope that it gets better or should I see a doctor about the pain in my jaw and ear instead of a dentist?

do not do anything else until you have seen a Neuromuscular Dentist first and get a consultation from them. It could be that your bite is off, and that filling has thrown everything out of whack. And now it is snowballing. http://www.top3dentists.com/pages/neuro_dentistry
