Neck Pain after extraction

by ashlynn0384, Sep 14, 2009 02:36AM
I had a wisdom tooth surgically extracted on 8/31/09.  I was 28 weeks pregnant at the time so the only anesthetic that was used was a local.  The extraction itself was incredibly traumatic and halfway through the extraction the surgeon offered to transfer me to the hospital to me put me under general anesthesia to complete the procedure.  I declined as he was halfway done and by time I would of gotten to the hospital the tooth would of been out.  The tooth was impacted and quite infected which prompted the removal.  After the procedure I was prescribed Tylenol #3 and Zithromax.  The day following the surgery I ended up vomitting profusely.  During this process the blood clot came out of the extraction site.  I continued to do salt water rinses and taking my medication.  Three days later (4 days post-op) I developed horrendous pain in my jaw, ear and at the extraction site.  I have never in my life experienced pain that severe.  I called the surgeon who then called me a stronger pain medication.  The pain medication seemed to take the edge off and the surgeon said he did not want to "pack" the site due to the medications used.  Now I am exactly two weeks post-op and still have severe pain.  It is to the point that my neck is even hurting.  I would actually compare it to nerve pain, it is a burning pain throughout my jaw and neck.  Plus, I still am having stabbing pains at the extraction site.

My question is:  Is it normal to have pain two weeks following the extraction?  Should I be concerned about the possibility of infection?  I am now 30 weeks pregnant and am concerned about an infection sending me into pre-term labor.  Also, the pain has become unbearable.  I'm at a loss as to what to do.  The site seems to be healing some although I still have to be very careful not to get food or anything in it.
