Swollen mouth gland turning into an abscess

My girlfriend has just been diagnosed as having a swollen gland in her gums...and this has mutated into an abscess...What exactly is the cause of this?Is it purely a bacterial infection or could it have been caused by taking a blow to the jaw...as in being physically hit?

By this I do mean the original cause of the problem altogether,as in what caused the whole problem in the first place,opposed to why the swollen gland mutated.Sorry.
