Tooth extraction pain after 12 days

Tooth extraction pain after 12 days

Hi, I had a lower right molar (number 1 I think, there's one more behind it and then the space where 3 used to be, the wisdom tooth?)

Anyway, I had no pain or discomfort to begin with, then after a couple of days the site naturally got a bit sore, particularly the gum and skin around the tooth in front and between the gum and my cheek, so sore I could no longer rinse with salt water. After about 1 week a mild occassional throb would eminate several times a day, again to be expected I think and I had occassion to revisit the dentist for a filling and he said it was healing fine, although he did pack the socket with the dry-socket treatment to see if it helped with the gum pain - it didn't. But now, almost 2 weeks later this throbbing is becoming more frequent and more distracting. It feels deep within the socket, the jaw maybe, and I know some of the alveolar bone (is that right) came away with the tooth because I saw it myself, in between the roots of the ectracted tooth wasd a fair sized chunk about the size of a small-finger nail.

I have packed the socket myself with clove oil / cotton bud (which I leave for about an hour) and I'm not sure whether this helps or not, I still get 'twinges', even after this and ibuprofen and codiene phosphate tablets I can still feel them, they aren't constant and they aren't 'hit the ceiling' but I'm alarmed by the fact nothing seems to remove or reduce them.

So, being a smoker and nearly 40 years of age I'm guessing some discomfort is to be expected for some weeks, I'm only concerned as it seems to be intensifying in both frequency and pain - sorry to ramble on, just trying to make sure I've covered it all.

The tooth concerned was mildly abscessed for which I took antiobiotics for almost a week after the extraction - there's no way the infection can return now the tooth is gone is there? Looks to me to be healing nicely.
