front tooth filling

my son had a filling put in in july of 09. it started to come out so i called to get it filled again he went in today on nov 2,09 and the dentist charged me again to replace the filling.. i dont feel it was right to do that. how long are they sopose to last? should i ask my insurance company about this.. how do i handle this?
