CHF VS COPD

CHF VS COPD

My father was diagnosed with CHF and then just recently with COPD.  From what I have read COPD is from smoking.   My father has never drank or smoked.  Is it possible that the CHF is giving symptons of COPD?   How do we know for sure he has both?

Hi,

The diagnosis of COPD is confirmed by spirometry, a test that measures breathing. Aside from smoking,  occupational exposures,  air pollution, genetics, and other risk factors such as bronchial hyperresponsiveness, repeated lung infection and possibly a diet high in cured meats.  COPD as an autoimmune disease has been studied wherein many individuals with this condition have stopped smoking and as a result have active inflammation in the lungs. The disease may continue to get worse for many years after stopping smoking due to this ongoing inflammation. This sustained inflammation is thought to be mediated by autoantibodies and autoreactive T cells.   It would help if you discuss this with your father's cardiologist to clarify any doubts. Take care and regards.
