Diet

I was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and chf 2 months ago.  I am wondering what kind of diet I should be on.  My cardiologist didn't really say anything about what I should be eating.

Sorry for the reasons that have brought you here.

Right here at medhelp in the search box above - put in the keywords: heart diet

In addition.......visit the American Heart Association

http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=1200010

And see what you discover on chfpatients.com

Tell us your ejection fraction - the medications that you are on and how often?

And can you work?

Kind regards,

Neil

Low fat, low/no salt.  Basically if it has some flavor, then you probably shouldn't have it.

I practice very lean meats, ie: Chicken, fish, venison, etc., and I grill it on a BBQ which cooks off any fat that may be present.

When I set up my plate, I use one with a inside circle on the plate.  All of my food goes inside that circle, of about 6-7 inches.  My plate is divided into fifths, and 3/5 is vegetables, 1/5 is meat and the other 1/5 is a starch(potatoe, pasta, ect.)  I never pile my food higher than 3/4 of  an inch, and my meat is always about the size of a deck of cards.

If you practice the above long enough, you will lose weight, and it will be slow and healthy.

I was diagnosed with CHF 3 1/2 years ago and have been on this diet ever since.  I've lost a lot of weight, and feel a lot better than I did when I first started.  I still have an EF of 15-20%, but I don't have as much swelling any more, and less trips to the hospital.

My doctor never put me on a diet, either, and I thought that was strange.  However, my husband and I, both, are on this diet and it really does make you feel better......once you get used to it.

I hope this helps......
