Ejection Fraction

Ejection Fraction

Last October I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Dilated Cardiomyopathy with the ejection fraction of 20% ( I am 63 years young).  In December I had a Bi-V ICD inserted.  Yesterday I had a MUGA test done and my ejection fraction has increased to 46%.  Does this mean that my enlarged heart could be reducing in size or just that the ICD and medication is working?  I had a lot of stress before my diagnosis and have not worked since.  Is it possible that if I go back to the stressful environment that my heart might get worse again or am I actually in the process of being cured?

Many patients with DCM had their heart condition improved following a good compliance to their treatment. Their EF has doubled in few months, their contractility got better and their muscle mass has increased. Your improved condition is not just the effect of your treatment. Your heart is really improving slowly. You need to continue your treatment to get back to your original status, and of course you need a particular lifestyle and diet.
Walking (and not any other exercise) will help building your heart muscles.
You need to get away from any stress inducing factor (stressful environment, caffeine containing drinks).
You also have to avoid salty food and fat containing diet.
Let us hear good news from you.

I am trying to take walks every day, but I still get tired easily.  I am on several meds: Diovan 160 mg daily; Coreg 25 mg twice daily; Lanoxin .25mg daily; Zocor 40 mg daily; Aldactone 25 mg daily and a baby asprin daily.
Thanks again for your comments.
